- Reducing Waste Products
Seven & i Holdings is working to curtail the generation of waste, and to promote reuse and recycling, with a view to reducing waste disposal. For product deliveries, we recommend the use of reusable containers and the delivery of apparel on hangers. Store employees are encouraged to rigorously sort waste for recycling purposes.

In addition to reducing the amount of food waste generated, Seven & i Holdings uses food waste to produce fertilizer and compost. Waste oil generated by the food preparation process is collected by our waste oil contractors for recycling into livestock feed materials, industrial products, and fuel.
Seven Farms
Ito-Yokado is turning food residue generated by Ito-Yokado stores into compost, and using the compost to grow crops at dedicated Seven Farm locations. The crops are harvested and sold at nearby Ito-Yokado stores. Ito-Yokado purchases all of the produce from the farms, even nonstandard items. At present, there are 10 Seven Farms across Japan covering approximately 70 ha of land. Ito-Yokado plans to continue opening more Seven Farms going forward.
Seven-Eleven Japan is expanding initiatives of recycling products that have reached their sell-by dates in stores into compost and livestock feed. As of May 2015, the Company is able to do this in 24 prefectures. In addition to these initiatives, Seven-Eleven Japan is conducting joint research with a manufacturer and a university on converting food residue generated by stores into liquid compost using organic waste processor systems installed in stores. In future, we aim to incorporate the harvested vegetables into products sold at Seven-Eleven.
At its stores, Ito-Yokado is installing more "biodegradable garbage processor" systems designed to break down organic waste using microorganisms. During the fiscal year ended February 28, 2015, installations were completed at 6 additional stores, bringing the total number of stores with these systems to 12. Through the power of microorganisms, "biodegradable garbage processor" systems break down even organic waste—garbage that is ill-suited to recycling, such as highly fibrous waste—into water and CO2. The processor reduces CO2 emissions compared to incineration processing, while effectively reducing waste volumes. Ito-Yokado plans to install these systems at 20 additional stores by the end of February 2017. Seven-Eleven Japan has also installed 25 units of a down-sized version of this "biodegradable garbage processor" system at its stores.

At Seven-Eleven Japan, rather than being disposed of, product shelving, fixtures, refrigeration cases and lights are repaired and reused at other stores when stores are to be rebuilt or closed. Furthermore, so as to reduce the amount of construction waste generated when stores are demolished, reusable steel frames and recyclable sashes are used in construction.
