Key Initiatives

Support for Children's Education

Seven & i Holdings accommodates requests from elementary, junior high and high schools in the communities where its stores are located and provides students with opportunities to learn about jobs performed by store employees and actually experience stocking the sales areas, serving customers, and packaging products. At Ito-Yokado for example, in the fiscal year ended February 28, 2015 we offered 604 such programs and 6,802 students participated.

Ito-Yokado and Sogo & Seibu have created store environments that make shopping easier for people with children, providing lounges for diaper changing and breast- or bottle-feeding. The stores also offer a free service that allows mothers and expectant mothers to consult with a health nurse or midwife on childcare issues to help address the problem of a general lack of accessible people for mothers to consult with. As of the end of February 2015, consultations have been made available at 120 Ito-Yokado stores and 18 Sogo & Seibu stores. We also hold parenting classes for mothers and events to introduce people to the joy of raising children. Ito-Yokado has been recognized for its activities in this area and in November 2014 received the Encouragement Award from the Kanagawa Prefectural Government at the Kanagawa Children and Child-Raising Support Awards.

Support for Seniors

In Japan, the number of retail stores has decreased in many areas along with shrinking public transportation networks. Increasing numbers of people also feel worried about driving as they age. For these reasons, the number of people who have difficulties with daily shopping has increased, mainly among the elderly, and this has become a social issue.

Support for Seniors

To help people in this situation, Seven & i Holdings provides various shopping support services. For example, Seven Meal offers home delivery of nutritiously balanced meals and food products sold at stores, and Net Supermarket enables consumers to order groceries on their computer or mobile phone and have their order delivered at a time of their choosing. In addition we offer mobile store services in which special trucks loaded with products visit customers directly. Seven-Eleven Japan for example, offers this service (photo right) using light trucks. The company has recently focused particularly on home delivery services that use ultra-small electric vehicles and power-assisted bicycles to deliver products directly to customers. Ito-Yokado specifically makes sales calls to assisted living facilities .

Support for Seniors

Ito-Yokado stores also have sales areas dedicated to care products and staffed with specially certified sales representatives who provide information on the products and respond to questions on nursing care and welfare in general.

Supporting People with Disabilities

Seven & i Holdings provides support for guide dog training, collecting donations at Ito-Yokado, York Mart, and Sogo & Seibu stores.

Supporting People with Disabilities

Sogo & Seibu have large permanent donation boxes at all stores to collect donations from customers for supporting guide dog training programs. In addition to money donated by customers at the stores, employees also make voluntary donations every month through the Bow-wow One Coin Club, and these are given along with donations to guide dog training organizations around Japan from the Sogo & Seibu Fund established by Sogo & Seibu headquarters and its labor union (A total of ¥458,510,434 was donated from March 2003 to March 31, 2015.) Apart from these fundraising activities, we also raise awareness among customers by holding twice yearly spring and fall events at all stores to deepen understanding of people with visual disabilities and the role of guide dogs.

At our store facilities, we have incorporated universal design considerations into store designs to make them more accessible for all people, and employee training is conducted to ensure store personnel are able to adequately assist people with physical disabilities. In addition, the ATM machines of Seven Bank are equipped with a voice guidance system that allows people with visual disabilities and others who cannot use a touch panel to operate the machines using an intercom to make cash withdrawals, deposits and balance inquiries.

Supporting Recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake

Supporting Recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake

The Great East Japan Earthquake of March 2011 was major blow to the Tohoku region. To assist in the region's reconstruction, Seven & i Holdings draws on its characteristics as a retailer bringing customers and business partners together to conduct activities through product sales while also participating in activities with employees and non-profit organizations.

Supporting Recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake

The Tohoku Kakehashi Project is a major sale event held three times a year at Ito-Yokado and other stores, for which we purchase products from Tohoku companies and food products manufacturers that were affected by the earthquake. Procuring the products is intended to help revitalize the region's agricultural and fishing industries while also helping ensure people outside of the affected areas do not forget the disaster. The number of participating business partners and items offered for sale has increased each year.

Sogo & Seibu helps women from Fukushima Prefecture's Iitate Village, who have been forced to live in temporary housing, to sell products that they make themselves. The company leverages its unique strengths as a department store business to assist them by offering a designer's advice on product design, providing sales areas and arranging store fixtures.

In addition, together with Group employees, we help support children's education in Tohoku through Bellmark program collections and also provide support for non-profit organizations active in the region through collection of items that can be converted to cash, such as unused postcards and used books.

Protecting the Environment Locally and Globally

Japan has an abundance of artificial forests that are no longer maintained and do not adequately perform the functions of regular forests, such as absorbing carbon dioxide. Seven & i Holdings is involved in forest preservation activities together with the Seven-Eleven Foundation to help address the issues of global CO2 emissions reduction and biodiversity protection. The "Seven & i Forest" conservation project maintains forests in 15 locations throughout Japan, coordinating with forestry associations and others involved to thin trees, clear out underbrush and other maintenance with the goal of turning the sites into sustainable forests that will also help protect biodiversity. Since Group employees nationwide participate in maintenance activities, the forests also serve as a way of raising environmental awareness. (Approximately 3,150 employees have participated in 33 events as of February 2015.)

Promoting use of forestry products from thinned trees is one of the issues facing Japan's forests. Seven & i Holdings works to promote consumption of forest thinnings by using them in its products. For more details, please visit
